1. What is digital literacy and why is it important?
Digital literacy is the ability to understand, utilize, create and learn through digital technologies. This can include using a smart phone, reading from a Kindle, using basic or advanced functions on a computer or navigating a website. It is important because the majority of the world functions using these technologies and more. Therefore, it is necessary for students, teachers, parents and others to have at least a basic knowledge of how to understand and/or use these technologies.
2. What should students be able to do with technology?
Students should be able to find information, analyze and assess the validity of a source found online, perform basic functions on a computer, learn to make responsible choices with technology, and how to protect themselves from the various dangers.
3. Why is it important for us to use technology in education?
It is important for us to use technology for a few reasons. First, it important for us to teach our students about its uses, benefits and drawbacks since it may be the only place they receive this information. Second, it bridges the gap between youth and adult, helping to create a connection between students and teachers where they may not have otherwise been one. When a student sees that their teacher has heard of, is familiar with or uses the things that they are interested in using, it gives them something in common, making the teacher more relatable.
4. What concerns do you have about using technology in education?
I am concerned about keeping their attention when using technology in the classroom and making sure they are not using the devices inappropriately. I am also concerned about making good choices about when technology can be an asset in the classroom versus when it becomes an unnecessary distraction.
5. What is your current stance on the use of technology in education?
I think technology should be used frequently in education. These students will be sent out into "the real world" of business, commerce, education, art, and other industries which will most likely all be using at least basic technology. If we as teachers don't embrace the fact that technology is here to stay, we will not be able to adequately prepare our students for life after school.
6. What are your goals for this course?
My goal is to learn and keep track of the many ways that I as a teacher can both use technology to my advantage in the classroom, and how I can use it to benefit and prepare my students. I hope to be able to end the semester with a range of sources and ideas for how to accomplish this.
